Step aside President Andrew Jackson, your time as the face of the $20 is as dead as you are. Women On 20s hosted a 10-week long poll, and the winner has been announced.
The winner, with 118,328 votes, to be on top of the $20 bill is…
Tubman helped hundreds of slaves escape to freedom on the Underground Railroad, she received 33.6% of the votes. In second place was Eleanor Roosevelt, followed by Rosa Parks and Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Wilma Mankiller.
The Evecutive Director of Women On 20s, Susan Ades Stone, hopes to have Harriet on a $20 bill in time for the centennial of women’s suffrage in 2020.
Of course, this doesn’t mean the Treasury has to change the bill. However, Women On 20s are launching an online campagin to urge the White House to adopt the changes, Obama has said he thinks it’s a “pretty good idea.”
It’s important to note that these changes do not need to be an Act of Congress. It just requires the Secretary of the Treasury to make the change, that man is Jack Lew.
“Men and women really built this country and it’s just that the women have been in the background. This is a chance to bring women into the foreground and recognize them for what they’ve accomplished and to show young people that if you make sacrifices and dedicate yourself to something, you will be recognized for it the same that a man would be.“
Not a bad idea! Do you disagree? Then you’re sexist!
