When Ben Moser was in fourth grade, he made a promise.

When Ben Moser was in fourth grade, he made a promise.

And he kept it.

When Ben asked his mom if kids with Down syndrome got to go to prom, she responded with, “If they’re asked.”

So Ben did just that, and he asked his childhood friend, Mary Lapkowicz, to go to prom with him. The two, according to a moving story about their friendship in The Patriot-News, have long shared a special bond.

He watched over her constantly,” their fourth grade teacher Tracey Spogli told the news outlet last week. “If she was looking like she wasn’t having fun, he would go over and talk to her. He would pull her in to whatever activity they were doing. He just always watched out for her.

Although the two no longer attend the same school, Moser, a quarterback on the football team at Susquehanna Township High School in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, did not forget about his promise.

On Friday, the 17-year-olds attended Moser’s prom together.

As news of their prom date went viral on Reddit this weekend, netizens celebrated the friendship that Lapkowicz and Moser share.

In the video below, the mothers of Ben and Mary, along with their fourth grade teacher, tell the teens’ special story. And Mary let it be known that she is big Nick Jonas fan!

“You should just be who you are, and do what’s right. Simple.”
