This Teen Wins Mother’s Day This Year — He’s Taking Her To Prom Because She Missed Her Own

We know who is going to win son of the year. 18-year-old Danotiss Smith of Pontiac, Michigan is making his prom date’s dream come true. He’s taking his mom, Belinda, after he learned the sad reason she couldn’t attend her own high school prom 24 years ago.

After she made sure he didn’t want to ask a special friend, and that he even cleared it with the principal first, Belinda admits she was extremely flattered.

Smith told ABC News that she missed her senior prom because, after her mother passed away in ’85, her and her siblings struggled to make ends meet. Their lives changed overnight. She remembers her sisters going, and how badly she wanted to go when she was asked, but by 1991, for her prom, the family simple couldn’t afford it.

She told her friends she didn’t want to go, so they wouldn’t suspect that they didn’t have the funds, but every day leading up to the prom, she cried. She vowed, when she had kids, they were going to prom. “I wanted them to have what I didn’t have,” Belinda said.

Her son, Danotiss explains, “I just felt like it was right to ask her cause she couldn’t go to her prom,” he said. “She couldn’t afford it back then so I thought it would be pretty sweet to ask her.” He laughs as he said some of his friends thought it was cool, but some did think it was weird.

Next year, Danotiss will be going to college in Iowa, but tonight, he’ll have the happiest date at prom. Check out the video below to watch the special moment.
